Ceramica Althea, 20 years of made in Italy tradition and design

Located in a historical area of great natural beauty in the province of Viterbo, the Italian bathroom furnishing company Ceramica Althea celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.

An extraordinary result when you think how it all started. From a very young age, the founder and current owner Genesio Bevilacqua initially became involved in the fascinating world of ceramics in order to finance his passion for motorbikes (he is the owner of the Althea Racing team which has won 4 Superbike world titles), starting out as a simple trader until he set up his company in 1994. A story rooted in hard work and passion, two characteristics essential for success: Genesio Bevilacqua transformed what was a simple shop into an industrial concern, now one of the most prestigious on the Italian and international scene.

At the Ceramica Althea SpA factory, sanitary fittings of the highest quality are produced, using the latest generation plants which combine high technology with the experience and know-how resulting from 20 years of history. The entire production process is highly automated both in the casting phase and the enamelling phase performed by latest generation robots, but at the same time the art of the ceramic tradition is preserved through a more artisan production still carried out by hand. The rigorous controls on all the work phases and the attention paid to the study of the products ensure that Althea is able to offer one of the most extensive ranges of ceramic products on the market, functional and above all catering for all tastes and requirements.

Ceramica Althea began its production with “artistic” products for the Middle East market.

althea20_1Due to its strong propensity for design, some lines set the trends for bathroom innovation and have been consolidated over the years. At the beginning of 2000 the HERA series amazed everyone with its cutting edge design. The “Kono” wash basin, for example, enclosed in an ultra-modern steel structure, represented a perfect blend of design and technology. In addition to the traditional solutions, the fittings were also produced in an original semi-suspended solution obtained by the addition of a steel or ceramic cone at the base of the suspended fitting.

althea20_2Over the years technology and skills evolved further, leading to creation of the ELLE collection in which large items were produced for the first time in a thickness of only a few centimetres (previously this had only been possible with alternative materials). A collection featuring clean-cut lines, simple elegant combinations and freedom in terms of composition.

The company name became truly established with the prize-winning OUTLINE line.

Outline is a passionate tribute to the style and spirit of the ’60s. The sanitary fittings become furnishing items – almost containers – due to the flat resting surface created by hollowing out the inner space.

Unusual forms never seen before, characterised by empty volumes that create a design or, better, a concept providing an interesting source of inspiration for bathroom furnishing to come.

Installation, maintenance and cleaning operations are simplified, and the completely enamelled surfaces reduce the degree of porosity of the ceramic to zero, guaranteeing improved hygiene.

althea20_3The raw material of extremely high quality and naturally the production, carried out exclusively in the company’s works in Italy, have enabled the firm to obtain the prestigious “Made in Italy Certificate” in compliance with the national and community regulations and directives. Ceramica Althea obtained the seal from a special control body, the Institute for the Protection of Italian Manufacturers (ITPI), which periodically carries out a series of rigorous controls on the firm to verify the quality, style and materials, and above all certifies that the entire product manufacturing cycle is performed in Italy. The “100% Made in Italy” brand and the historic and proven production standards enable Ceramica Althea to market products of the highest quality and prestige and to offer a very important guarantee of product authenticity.

Ceramica Althea is also recognised for the innovative forms of its products, the result of a successful synergy between the technical department and the inventiveness of the designer Maya Cohen, whose creations make their mark due to their refined design, which offers infinite solutions of forms and colours, giving the entire Althea production range a unique and unmistakeable touch. This added value is  confirmed by numerous international recognitions such as DESIGN PLUS, GOOD DESIGN and nominations for the DESIGNPREIS for various products, in addition to prestigious participations including “The New Italian Design” exhibition at the Triennale in Milan and “Design for Made in Italy” at RomaD+.
